2 for 2 for the Greeks at Paris

The two top Greek tennis players at the moment, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari, started their first round of Roland Garros with victory.

The start was made by the Greek, No. 39 of the world ranking imposed on Mandy Minella from Luxembourg with 2-0 sets 7-6 (5), 6-2 in a game that lasted nearly 2 hours. This was Sakkari’s first victory in the top clay tournament, with which she secured her participation in Roland Garros’s 2nd round. There he will be confronted by Spanish Carla Suarez Navarro, a specialist in clay-court and responsible for last year’s Sakkari’s exclusion in the first round of the tournament.

Shortly after, Stefanos Tsitsipas took the lead, winning a historic victory over the Spanish Carlos Taberner and also qualifying in the second round of Roland Garros.

It took us almost 11 years to see a Greek tennis player qualify for a second round of a Grand Slam. Last time was made by Konstantinos Economides again in Roland Garros.

Tsitsipas qualified against a very good tennis player with 3-1 sets, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 after a great battle of almost 3.5 hours.

The next opponent is probably Austrian Dominic Thiem, who is currently leading 2-0 sets of Belarusian Ivashka and comes from the conquest of Lyon Open just 2 days ago.
