The WTA awards were announced a few days after a worldwide internet vote that showed the best players in six categories. Five of these relate to active player participation while the last for the WTA Jerry Diamond ACES prize is for off-field action.
Australian Asleigh Barty won the Player of the Year award becoming the No. 1 worldwide for the first time in her career and restoring the title to her country after many years (1976 / Evonne Goolagong Cawley). The Australian player set a record in 2019 by taking on Roland Garros and the WTA finals, raising her to the top of the world rankings. Most of the time this award has been won by three players who have made history in the tennis world. The first is Steffi Graf with 8 titles, while Serena Williams and Martina Navratilova gained 7 times the title of the best tennis player.
The award for the best players at the doubles was won by Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic who brought the title for the second time. Sofia Kenin won the title of Most Improved Player of the Year after being included in the top 50 of the sport. Bianca Andreescu won the title of best newcomer as she managed to climb from the No. 178 of the world rankings to the No. 5 within a year at 19 while the previous year gave her significant victories.
Belinda Bencic came back harder after an injury that dropped her in the world rankings No. 318 by winning the title of the best re-emerging athlete. Finally, Kiki Bertens was honored with the title of best promotion of the sport through her online and philanthropic actions.
