Τhe Greek team started with a defeat at Hopman Cup, in its re-appearence at the tournament after 17 years!!!
The opening series of the tournament was completed a while ago with Team Great Britain team taking the victory over Team Greece with 2-1.
Team Great Britain took the lead after Cameron Norrie’s, No. 91 in the world ranking, possibly achieving the biggest victory of his career against Stephanos Tsitsipas, No 15 in the world, with 7-6 (8), 6-4 in 107 minutes.
The Greek champion made many effortless mistakes that Norrie took advantage of, taking the win relatively easily.
In his statements after the game, Tsitsipas said “It was difficult to adapt from the beginning. Cameron played very well, but I really felt uncomfortable, I do not know why. Probably due to weather conditions. The heat here – is a little different. It’s tougher conditions than in Dubai where I was preparing”.
“I feel like I’m tired easily, something I’m not happy about because I trained very hard during the off-season,” he added.
In the next match of the series, Sakkari managed to win Katie Boulter with 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in a fascinating game, equalising to 1-1.
The Greek champion appeared much more prepared than Tsitsipas, in her debut at the event and took a great victory against a compelling opponent.
In the final game of the series, however, for the double mixed, Sakkari seemed quite tired, unable to really help Tsitsipas. The British team showed more determination in the crucial points and had better co-operation, managing to prevail with 4-3, 3 (2) -4, 4-3 (4) thus winning 2-1 the series.
Next opponent for Team Greece will be Team USA consisting of Frances Tiafoe and Serena Williams on Monday morning.
