Week 42 on the tennis calendar ends today with the finals of both the men’s and women’s tournaments taking place across Europe.
The first final of the day is the one between Belinda Bencic and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who will compete for the Kremlin Cup trophy in Moscow, Russia. The Swiss Bencic is of course the big favorite, but Russian Pavlyuchenkova, too, has made an excellent tournament (eliminated Sakari in the first round) and will fight hard for victory in front of her compatriots.
Shortly thereafter, for the same tournament, another Russian, Andrey Rublev will compete for the men’s trophy against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino with the game expected to be quite ambiguous.
At about the same time, in Brussels, we look forward to the battle between two great tennis athletes for winning the European Open. The reason for them, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray, head to head in a final 11 years later (the British had won the title in the Doha tournament). Overall, Murray outscores Wawrinka by 3 wins (11-8 overall), winning their most recent game at Eastbourne.
Finally, in Sweden, Denis Shapovalov competes with Filip Krajinović for the Intrum Stockholm Open title.
