Osaka, after her triumph in the US Open, won Melbourne, surpassing her opponent, Petra Kvitova, winning her second consecutive Grand Slam title and battle for No.1 in the world ranking. The Japanese tennis player stole the first world ranking from Halep, which after that will go down to No. 3.
With a final score of 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4, Osaka won the Australian Open crown at the Rod Laver Arena. Despite having played a very strong match, Kvitova did not manage to win and be a winner.
Osaka gave an almost flawless appearance both in its exciting semi-final victory and the final and will become the youngest player – after Wozniacki in 2010 – to be No. 1 in the world ranking. Please note that Osaka is Japan’s first spokesperson to be ranked No. 1 in the world ranking.
