The two leading Greek tennis players return to the courts this week after attending their first Grand Slam of the season in Australia.
This afternoon, Maria Sakkari faces Vitalia Diatchenko for the first round of the WTA Premier tournament, St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy held in St. Petersburg, Russia. Sakkari’s opponent has gone through the qualifiers and is in no way frightening the Greek tennis player, despite the fact that she will play at home. Sakkari has been in great form lately, and comes from qualifying for the first time in a second round of a Grand Slam. In St. Petersburg she starts from the No. 6 position on the dashboard and certainly has a great chance to be distinguished. Of the other participants the names of Kiki Bertens, Belinda Bencic and Petra Kvitova are the ones that stand out.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, on the other hand, wants to forget his not-so-good performance at the Australian Open, and throws himself into the battle of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, tomorrow against the always dangerous Hubert Hurkacz. The 21-year-old tennis player has to deal with the very bad tradition of this tournament as he has not yet managed to taste the joy of victory in all 3 of his appearances so far.
