The Greek champion lost to her very good friend, Dona Vekic, with 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of Adelaide International.
The 24-year-old athlete started the game impressively, and easily got the first set. But her opponent increased her performance in the second set and equalized. In the third and decisive set, Maria showed signs of fatigue and managed to win only one game and consequently lost the game and the qualification.
Maria is now turning her attention to the upcoming Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, where she hopes to be in the second week of the tournament, something she has not yet achieved in any Grand Slam.
In her post-game statements she said, among other things: “I know and I feel I will have a good year, because I was well prepared for it”
“I have expectations for myself, but I don’t go to tournaments with the idea that I have to win, or I have to reach the second week of a Slam. I know it’s going to come, but I can’t tell you exactly when. Of course I want to be in the TOP 10, and I’m sure it will come, maybe this year or next year.”
