The dream is over in Australia for Maria Sakkari despite her very generous efforts in the quarter-finals. The Greek champion played against Czech Petra Kvitova, v.8 in the world rankings and lost 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-2 in the sets.
Maria started very well in the first set but also at the beginning of the second set and even led 2-0. She took advantage of her opponent’s slowness very well but then Kvitova quickly reduced the gap to 2-1 in consecutive wins. In the 10th round Maria suffered a break and the score was 5-5. She then tried to turn the tie-breaks to no avail but as she was disadvantaged in the service over her opponent.
Kvitova who has already won the Grand Slam for two times eventually continued her way to victory and dominated the third set 3-0. On the other hand, with her win she managed to reach the final eight and her next opponent in the semifinals will be judged between Ashleigh Barty’s n.1 and Alison Riske’s n.19.
Despite her defeat, however, Sakarri just dropped a major run in the Australian Open shortly before the semifinals as she managed to reach the top sixteen for the first time in her career and she may even advance to the top twenty in the world rankings.
