Another huge surprise took place in the New York stadiums. This time, the victim was Roger Federer who lost 6-3, 5-3 losing 2 set points for 2-0. John Millman, who achieved the most important career victory, was the first to qualify for the Grand Slam quarter-finals.
The evening was going fine for the 37-year-old Swiss, who scored 6-3, 5-3 and 40-15 in order to close the second set. Millman, however, did not quit Federer’s two set points, he managed the break and the surprise of the year, winning with a final score of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3). It will be just the second time in the last 15 years that the Swiss will not fight in the quarterfinals of the American Open.
The 29-year-old Australian, No. 55 of the world rankings, won his first career victory against a top ten player by winning the world’s second-ranked championship, securing a quarter-final game against Novak Djokovic, plus his rise to the top 40 tennis players in the world!
