Without big surprises, the 3rd day of the tournament in Sydney continued for both men and women.
In men’s tournament, the Australians Jordan Thompson and John Millman got boost from their compatriots in the stands and won their games in 3 sets against Taro Daniel and Frances Tiafoe respectively. The other Australian James Duckworth, however, was eliminated in the same way by Márton Fucsovics with 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The last Australian in the program, and one of the favorites to win the title, Alex de Minaur is currently playing against Reilly Opelka in the game that completes today’s schedule.
Bear in mind that Stefanos Tsitsipas, which is the No.1 of the board, will debut tomorrow morning (around 6:30 Greek time) against Guido Andreozzi who yesterday made the surprise excluding another Australian, Matthew Ebden.
In women’s tournamnet likewise all the favorites prevailed except Daria Kasatkina No 8 on the board, which was eliminated by Aliaksandra Sasnovich quite easily with 6-1, 6-4. Sloane Stephens, despite having difficulty, qualified for best 16 by winning 0-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The No. 2 of the board and last year’s champion, Angelique Kerber won Camila Giorgi’s 7-6 (3), 6-2 in her debut at the tournament, qualifying for the best 8.
The big favorite, Simona Halep, will make her debut tomorrow morning with Ashleigh Barty, who will not be an easy opponent especially playing in front of her compatriots, as she showed in her victorious debut against Jeļena Ostapenko.
