The list of the nine strongest tennis players of the year has been announced by the official WTA site. At the top is Australian player Ashleigh Barty, who won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open, winning the tennis player of the year title for the first time in her career. The 24-year-old also scored another 56 wins for the season and also won the WTA Finals.
She competes for the grand prize with Bianca Andreescu, who spent a remarkable tennis year posting a 48-7 record and claimed the US Open title despite suffering a shoulder injury. Andreescu is the fifth in the world rankings. Naomi Osaka took third place in the rankings, as she took the honors in Australia while lifting silverware at the Pan Pacific Open and China Open.
The list of Grand Slam contenders is complete with Simona Halep (4th) and Karolina Priskova (2nd). The former is known for her solemn victory over Serena Williams while scoring 43 victories over the year. Priskova on the other hand in World No. 2 is still struggling to get her first major title, but the Czech athlete still sets high standards.
WTA contenders at the doubles were also announced with US Open champions Elise Mertens and Aria Sabalenka competing against Barbora Strykova and Hsieh Su-Wei, Kristina Mladenovic and Timea Babos as well as Zhang Shuai and Samantha Stosur.
In the category of fastest-improved players are three American nominees (Amanda Anisimova, Sofia Kenin and Alison Riske). Belinda Bencic, Zheng Saisai and Donna Vekic compete with them. Bencic also falls into the category of the tennis players who have made the most dynamic comeback of the year along with Svetlana Kuznetsova and Bethanie Mattek Sands.
Finally, Andreescu is back in the category with the newcomers of the year, along with other fresh space names such as 15-year-old Coco Gauff, Karolina Muchova, Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek and Dayana Yastremska. The results of the vote on the most women-held tennis institution will be announced on 11/12.
